Young readers are encouraged to practice their reading skills by joining Book Buddies. Youth Services’ Junior Volunteers will be partnered with Book Buddy participants for approximately one hour of reading. This program focuses on book sharing rather than tutoring. Please register for each date your child will attend beginning June 17.

Green Gardening

Would you like to learn how to grow your own vegetables year-round? Get your hands dirty while planting delicious veggies to eat with your family and friends. Not only will participants bring home their own tray of micro-greens, everyone will have the opportunity to sample a variety of locally grown produce. This program is presented by Pushing the Envelope Farm in partnership with Kane County’s Fit for Kids. Registration required.

Duct Tape Design

Learn the duct tape weaving method and add texture and design flare to any of your duct tape creations. We’ll work on creating a placemat or a lunchbox. Bring duct tape and scissors. Registration required.

 

Apple Pie

What if you wanted to bake an apple pie and the store was closed? You may just have to go around the world to find what you need. We’ll read the book How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World by Marjorie Priceman and travel to exotic locations to make this all-American favorite pie. Registration required.

 

Batik Book Bags

Local artist, Karine Bauch, will offer an opportunity for children to create a faux batik design on a book bag. Registration required. 

 

Perfectly Peachy Pastels

Students will create realistic drawings of fruit using soft pastels and charcoal pencils. Instruction will be given by local artist, Karine Bauch. Registration required. 

 

Taste of India

Explore India with our guest, Siva Shankari Ananth. Sample some of the foods and spices from this exotic country, learn about the wildlife and compare their way of life with our own. Registration required.

 

Library ‘Lympics

Summer Reading Club Kickoff

Today’s menu of Summer Reading Club fun includes: A visit from book character, Arthur at 11 am presented by Barnes and Noble Booksellers. Then from 11:30 – 12:30 children are invited to participate in a variety of food related games and an old fashioned ice cream social. No registration required

American Eagle Productions brings the classic children’s story, James and the Giant Peach to life in a lively musical theater production. Join James on his adventures inside a giant peach. Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind show. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open at 6:45pm. No registration required. Lunch with the Author

Pack a lunch and join author/illustrator Tom Lichtenheld as he shares his secrets on how he creates a book. Discover how Tom wrote his first book, how he comes up with ideas and produces his final illustrations. Those attending may bring their own Tom Lichtenheld book for him to sign. This is a Young Friends Event sponsored by the Friends of the Batavia Public Library. Please register.

 

Book Character Visit

Dave Herzog’s Marionettes

 

Thurs., July 19, 7pm

Dave Herzog returns with an all new cast of characters in “Puppet Soup”. This deliciously delectable marionette variety show will feature a menu of performances by Carmen Ensalada, a spicy South American dish; Chicago Red, a fellow who’s a real hot dogger on roller blades, and many more. As always his signature character, Wally the Basset Hound, will be along to share in the fun as the boys and girls help him find his lost bratwurst. The doors to the meeting room will open at 6:45 p.m. No registration necessary.

  

Summer Reading Club Finale

All Summer Reading Club participants and their families are invited to this really “cool” Summer Reading Club Finale with Mr. Freeze on Thursday, August 2 at 7:00 p.m.  Fermilab scientist, Jerry Zimmerman, (a.k.a. Mr. Freeze) will amaze you with his cryogenics demonstration. Fun facts and lots of surprises are in store. Free tickets for this performance will be available at the Youth Services Desk beginning July 8. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Batavia Public Library. Families are invited to bring a food donation for the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry. No registration necessary.
