MONARCH AWARD

2013 MASTER LIST

 

The Monarch Award is designed to encourage Illinois children to read critically and to become familiar with children’s books, authors and illustrators.

 

The award is named for the Monarch Butterfly and symbolizes the growth, change and freedom that characterize the emergent reader. The Monarch Award is given annually to an author and/or illustrator of a book voted as their favorite by participating K-3 children in Illinois.

BLUESTEM AWARD

2013 MASTER LIST

 

The Bluestem Award is designed for students in grades 3-5 who are ready for longer titles than found on the Monarch list, but not quite ready for the sophistication of some of the Rebecca Caudill titles.

 

The award may include both timeless classics and current titles, as well as books that have appeared on Monarch and Rebecca Caudill lists.

 

Children who have read or had read to them at least 4 of the 20 Master List titles are eligible to vote in February at participating schools. The winner will be announced in April during National Library Week.The award is named in honor of Big Bluestem which is the state prairie grass.

The Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Book Award was established in 1987 in honor of children’s writer Rebecca Caudill, a longtime resident of Urbana, Illinois. To be eligible to vote in February, students must be in the 4th through 8th grades, have read or listened to at least 3 books on the list and attend a participating school.
